With Senator Stephanie Chang and Representative Padma Kuppa, we pushed the Michigan Public Service Commission to make its Lifeline provider list actually useful — and it worked.
The Lifeline program provides limited, free phone service for low-income folks to ensure that all Americans have the opportunities and security that phone service brings, including being able to connect to jobs, family, and emergency services.
Because of the pandemic, everyone from governments to social service organizations switched from in-person to virtual to service delivery. This made making sure folks knew which telephone company offered the best data plan and the most minutes so they could best access the services they needed to climb out of poverty and homelessness. That's why we, with help from Senator Stephanie Chang and Representative Padma Kuppa et. al., asked the Michigan Public Service Commission to include rate and allowance information (e.g. min/txt/data caps) on the Lifeline provider list they create for Michiganders.
The MPSC updated the list in September.
