MDE adopts Dignity in Schools and MARSE amendments

After federal school discipline guidance was rescinded, Street Democracy and the Rethink coalition pushed the state to keep it in place — and won.

In 2014 the US Departments of Justice and Education issued joint guidance for schools regarding the reformation of school discipline practices that disproportionately affect students from minority populations, e.g. race, gender, sexual orientation, etc... This guidance was rescinded in 2018.

The Rethink coalition advocated before the Michigan Department of Education urging adoptiong of a resolution stating that Michigan schools will continue to follow the principles established in the 2014 guidance and amendment of the Michigan Administrative Rules on Special Education (MARSE) to include rules regarding consideration of the seven factors during a discipline determination.

Both recommendations were adopted by the MDE.
