A 2019 push by Street Democracy helped end a rule that trapped people without a license for years over minor violations.
Prior to 2023, MCL 257.303(g) required residents who never had a drivers license but acquired two violations to wait 3-years before they could get one, keeping folks trapped without status.
In 2019, we raised issue with the Michigan Secretary of State and advocated for removal of the provision in its entirety. MDOS's took HB5103-2023 across the finish line, with our public comment in support of course.
